Does A Pet Really Need Health Insurance?

With the rising costs of healthcare today, most of us never consider the fact that the cost of pet health is increasing also. In just the past five years, veterinary costs have increased at almost the same pace as traditional medicine. Due to this, many people are now looking for some extra help in keeping their pets as healthy as they are.

As with most all insurance, pet insurance does have premiums and deductibles you must pay. The premium normally varies from breed to breed and of course, how much coverage you chose. Coverage options range from basic, such as vaccine coverage only, all the way up to catastrophic injury. As for deductible, the average is about $100 per calendar year, but once again, this depends on the plan you pick and what you can afford.

As mentioned before, coverage can vary greatly from plan to plan. Some plans are very comprehensive, covering annual checkups, routine care, vaccinations and other preventive medications, and spaying/neutering, as well as illnesses and accidents. These plans are often the most expensive, but offer the most protection for your pet. A major positive for pet health plans is the emergency portion of coverage is often available immediately, with other portions of coverage being available within about 30 days.

One item to carefully scrutinize while comparing plans is pre-existing condition or age clauses. As with our own health plans, there are many pet plans that will not cover a pre-existing condition or require a lengthy waiting period before coverage begins. Some plans will not even cover a pet with any existing condition. Same with age, many plans have limits on the age a pet can be when you initially sign them up. Most prefer pets to be 8 years or younger, some will insure at any age, but those are far and in between and often very costly with limited coverage.

While pet insurance can be costly, it is often worth the piece of mind it will bring you knowing your pet will be covered in case of an unforeseen event. Just remember, there are several options available, so research the various plans available and make an informed decision before buying any insurance.

BringYourPet.com Affiliated Animal Welfare Charities

Newsletter Featured Charity

Hearts United for Animals (HUA) is a no-kill shelter, sanctuary and animal welfare organization dedicated to the relief of suffering. They take the creatures who are lost, afraid, hungry, or ill and comfort them, give them a warm soft bed, good food, medical care and most of all, love. HUA is not a typical shelter. There are no cages. The dogs share large fenced fields where they romp and play with friends. They know and love every one of their dogs. Every dog that is adopted from HUA has been altered, is current on all vaccinations, is heartworm negative and is on heartworm and flea preventative.
