House
Training a New Puppy A
new puppy is supposed to bring joy and happiness to the entire household; however,
that is not always the case. It is hard to feel joy when you constantly find urine
stains and little "presents" left throughout your house. One thing to
remember though, your puppy must be taught where to potty, almost as a child must
be potty trained. The
first thing to remember in housetraining your puppy is that it will take time,
and depending on the breed, lots of it. Smaller dogs tend to take longer to train
than larger breeds so keep that in mind when you are selecting your new puppy.
A puppy simply cannot control it's bladder for more than a few hours at a time.
If you plan to be gone for more than a few hours every day, you might want to
put off getting a puppy, or arrange for someone to come and let the puppy out. Another
helpful hint in training is to put your puppy on a feeding schedule. Often, if
you feed your puppy at a regular time, he will need to potty at a regular time
also. In general, a puppy will usually need to go out within about 30 minutes
of feeding. Also, be sure to feed your pet a high quality puppy food. Better quality
ingredients will help keep your puppy regular. The
biggest problem encountered with house training is consistency. You must take
your puppy out on a somewhat regular schedule, and take your puppy to the same
area. The need for one main potty area is that your puppy will smell their previous
elimination, and will learn to recognize that area as the potty area. This also
comes in handy when you are short on time. When you take your puppy out, simply
take it to the potty area and it will recognize what you want it to do from the
smell. Some additional
things you can do to ease housetraining are: - Watch
for signs such as sniffing around or circling. When you see these signs, immediately
take him outside to his bathroom spot.
- Always
praise your puppy immediately after he has finished eliminating, not after he
comes back inside the house.
- Only
take your puppy on a walk or play outdoors with your puppy after he has eliminated
in his potty area. This can be used as a reward for eliminating outside.
- Use
a regular phrase such as, "go potty" every time you take your puppy
outside. Even though your puppy may not understand the words, he will understand
the constant sound and tone of your voice when you speak that phrase.
- Do
not punish your puppy. Your puppy will not understand what he is being punished
for.
House
training a puppy takes a lot of commitment and vigilance. By following some basic
guidelines and staying committed, you and your puppy will both enjoy the comfort
that house training can bring.

United for Animals (HUA) is a no-kill shelter, sanctuary and animal welfare organization
dedicated to the relief of suffering. They take the creatures who are lost, afraid,
hungry, or ill and comfort them, give them a warm soft bed, good food, medical
care and most of all, love. HUA is not a typical shelter. There are no cages.
The dogs share large fenced fields where they romp and play with friends. They
know and love every one of their dogs. Every dog that is adopted from HUA has
been altered, is current on all vaccinations, is heartworm negative and is on
heartworm and flea preventative. Contact
