Choosing
the Perfect Pet The
best advise for choosing the perfect pet… well, there is no perfect pet or perfect
breed, but with the right research you can find the perfect pet for you and your
family. First, do not buy a pet on impulse! Sure they're cute and playful and
pull at your heartstrings, but this is a lifetime commitment; so take the time
to fully research the type and breed of animal that you are interested in before
brining them home. Start by asking the right questions: Why
do you want a pet? Are you looking for companionship? Do you want the unconditional
love of an animal? Do you want to teach your children responsibility? Do you want
your children to grow up with a loyal dog at their side just as you did? Do you
want the extra protection for your home? Do you need a service or work animal?
What type of pet do you have room for in your home? While birds,
fish, and rabbits can live just about anywhere, a dog or cat may require a little
more room - especially a large or very active dog. Do you have a fenced-in yard
or easy access to walking paths? What
kind of activities do you enjoy doing? Are you a book worm? Do you look
forward to spending a quiet night at home curled up in a blanket reading the latest
bestseller? Or are you constantly on the go - hiking, walking, climbing, and camping?
Your pet needs to enjoy doing what you enjoy. Are you home enough? No
matter how much you want a pet, you have to be home enough to care for it. If
you go to work early and come home late and spend your weekends out, a pet probably
isn't for you. Remember, with your work, friends, family, church, and activities,
you have a life out side of your pet; but for your pet, you are his life. And
if you will be away from home often, who will care for your pet? Will a friend
or family member be able to step in or will your pet spend a lot of time at a
boarding facility? Do
you have young children? There are certain types of animals and breeds
that are not appropriate to have in a home with young children. No matter how
well behaved your child may be, there will probably come a time when he or she
accidentally (or on purpose) pulls a tail or steps on a paw. Make sure the breed
you choose does not have a bad temperament. The animal's immediate reaction should
not be to bite first and ask questions later. We all know that a lot of patience
is needed when dealing with a child - this certainly applies to animals too! How
much will the initial and continuing cost of the pet be? Are you interested
in an expensive breed? There is the initial cost of purchasing the animal and
also the various registration fees. If you plan on breeding or showing your animal
the costs can be even higher. There is also the cost of food, treats, toys, collars,
leashes, and all the other necessities of a pet. Also, vet prices continue to
rise, so if this is a concern for you, try to avoid breeds that are known to have
health problems. Do
you or any member of your family have pet allergies? This will certainly
impact the type of pet you choose. Some people are able to live with both allergies
and their pet, but not everyone can. This is a personal medical choice that every
pet owner needs to make. What
characteristics are you looking for in a pet? This list can go on forever.
The important thing is that you and your family come up with a list of characteristics
that you are looking for. Here are some suggestions for starting points: - What
size do you want your pet to be when it's full grown?
- Are
you up for the challenge of housetraining or would you rather adopt an older animal?
- Do
you care if the animal is male or female?
- Do
you want a short haired or a longhaired animal?
- How
much grooming are you willing to do or pay for?
- How
do you feel about shedding?

United for Animals (HUA) is a no-kill shelter, sanctuary and animal welfare organization
dedicated to the relief of suffering. They take the creatures who are lost, afraid,
hungry, or ill and comfort them, give them a warm soft bed, good food, medical
care and most of all, love. HUA is not a typical shelter. There are no cages.
The dogs share large fenced fields where they romp and play with friends. They
know and love every one of their dogs. Every dog that is adopted from HUA has
been altered, is current on all vaccinations, is heartworm negative and is on
heartworm and flea preventative. Contact
