Throw
a Dog a Bone!
Sure, you can
run down to the grocery store and buy a box of treats; but making
homemade treats for your special pooch will not only save you money,
but keep your dog healthy. You choose the ingredients that go in
to the dish. You know your dog, his particular allergies or health
concerns.
Be sure that you don't include any ingredients known to be harmful
to dogs, such as raisins, grapes, chocolate, and onions. So check
the label of any prepared foods that you are using such as baby
food or bouillon. Remember that not all food that's good for humans
is good for dogs. Some foods can cause allergic reactions--itchy
skin, rashes, dull, thinning hair, and other coat problems.
Some pups also
require special diets due to allergies or health problems and can't
indulge in store-bought treats. If you indulge your furry friend
in a home-made treat you can rest assured that it's wheat-free,
yeast-free, or meat-free.
Experiment with
recipes using all-natural ingredients. Commercial varieties often
are high in fat and include additives, preservatives, and fillers
with little nutritional value.
So if you love
your pooch and like to bake, dive in to our dog treat recipes!
Liver
Chews
1 lb liver (any
kind)
1 cup flour (any kind)
1 cup corn meal
2 T. garlic powder
1 T. oil
Puree the liver
(or have butcher do it) and mix in the other ingredients. Grease
a foil lined cookie sheet and pour in batter. Bake at 350 degrees
for about 25 minutes. Cool and break in pieces and store in bags
in the freezer. Don't worry, they thaw very quickly!
Liver Kibbles
1 lb. chicken
liver
1 cup graham cracker crumbs
3 T. molasses or honey
¼ cup parsley
Process all
ingredients in food processor until smooth. Pour batter into an
8-inch round or square glass pan. Microwave on high power approximately
6-8 minutes or until toothpick inserted in the center comes out
clean. Turn out of pan as soon as completely cooked and cut into
to squares. Put the bits on a foil-lined cookie sheet and bake for
1 ½ hours at 200 degrees. This dries it out into a dry treat
that doesn't leave any residue.
Bow-Wow
Brownies
1 lb chicken
or beef liver and/or heart meat
1 cup corn meal
1 1/2 cups flour
1 tsp fresh minced garlic (or 1/2 tsp garlic powder)
1 tsp fennel, anise, coriander, caraway or cumin
1/2 tsp salt
Grind liver
in food processor. Gradually add flour, corn meal, and spices to
form a stiff dough (you may not need to add all the flour). Spread
dough on to a greased foil-lined cookie sheet. Bake for 20 minutes
at 350 degrees. Allow to cool 10 minutes and cut into squares. Treats
can be refrigerated or frozen.
The recipe is
very flexible and you can always throw in other nutritious and tasty
items such as egg, yogurt, grated carrots, walnuts, or parsley.
Just adjust the amount of flour to keep the dough at a stiff consistency.
Tuna- rific Treats
2 6-oz. cans
tuna in water (do not drain)
2 eggs
1 to 1 ½ c. rice flour
1 T. garlic powder
parmesan cheese
Pour tuna with
liquid in a blender and liquefy (adding extra water if needed).
Add eggs, flour, and garlic. Spread batter in to a greased 8-inch
square cake pan. Sprinkle generously with parmesan cheese. Bake
at 350 degrees for 15 minutes. Once cooled, cut into small squares.
They can be frozen.
Begging for Bananas
3 c. oatmeal
1 1/4 c. flour
2 eggs
1/4 c. oil
1/2 c. honey
1/2 c. milk
2 bananas
Mix eggs, oil,
honey, milk, and bananas. Add flour and oatmeal. Spread into a well-greased
cookie sheet and bake at 325 degrees for about 25 minutes. Cut into
small squares. Keep refrigerated or frozen.
Peanut Butter Bones
2 T. corn oil
½ c. peanut butter
1 c. water
1 c. whole wheat flour
2 c. white flour
Mix oil, peanut
butter, and water. Add flour one cup at a time. Knead the dough
into a firm ball. Roll out the dough to about a quarter inch thickness
and cut out cookies. Bone-shaped cookies are the best! Bake on a
cookie sheet for 20 minutes at 350 degrees.
